History of the Doljanchi
The centuries-old traditional Korean Dol celebration is alive and well, which is why we offer a dol invitation selection. This first birthday of a Korean child is still celebrated as a time of congratulations for their parents and family. In Korean culture, this milestone event is marked with the making and wearing of baby’s first Hanbok, the traditional attire worn during festivals and celebrations, and tables set with dozens of varying symbolic foods. Doljanchi translates to Birthday Banquet. You’ll want a dol invitation that explains the custom to your friends who have not learned of this fun tradition.
In modern Dol parties, taking a picture of the child is an important part of the event. The photo is generally taken with the child seated and a Korean traditional screen used as the background. These photos can be taken in advance and used as the focus of the Dol invitation.
The Doljabi Ceremony
The traditional Korean Doljanchi, or first birthday celebration, includes a ceremony called Doljabi. In this ancient tradition, a variety of objects are put in front of the child to see what he chooses. His choice is told to predict his future, and of course the family wants to bless the child with a prosperous future. As our Doljanchi invitation shows, a traditional Doljabi table (Dolsang) may include a pencil or book (intelligence), food (won’t go hungry), money (wealth), thread or string (long life), needle, pincushion, ruler, and/or scissors (talent in the hands), and a bow and arrow (military). A modern Doljabi table may include a microphone (entertainer), a ball (athlete), a computer mouse (technically adept), a gavel (judge), a stethoscope (doctor), money or a piggy bank (entrepreneur), graduation cap, or book (scholar), scientific objects (scientist or inventor).
Steeped in custom and tradition, this birthday celebration continues to say “saeng-il chugha”. Happy Birthday.
